Raising nerdy to the power of awesome.

Video description
In which John Green discusses the "real" unemployment rate in the United States, and how different ways of calculating jobless rates have led to vastly different conclusions about the health of the U.S. economy. SOURCES BELOW!

Other questions addressed include: What is the difference between the U1 unemployment rate and the U6 unemployment rate? Which one is the better measure of unemployment? What percentage of Americans are employed? And what percentage of those unemployed are looking for work? And what does it all say about the present and future of the U.S. economy, and our divisive political discourse? Thank you to Rosianna for all the charts and graphs! http://youtube.com/rosianna

The information in this video came from:

1. Trading Economics has great and visually intuitive explanations of the U-3 unemployment rate over time in the United States: http://youtube.com/rosianna

2. BLS stats about labor force participation rates and how many people out of the labor force say they "do not want a job now" http://youtube.com/rosianna

3. Information about the civilian labor force participation rate can be found here: http://youtube.com/rosianna and the labor force participation rate for those between 25 and 54 can be found here: http://youtube.com/rosianna

4. This is a highly detailed article that I found helpful looking at causes of the decline in labor force participation: http://youtube.com/rosianna An easier to read overview at the Washington Post: http://youtube.com/rosianna

5. Real median household income in the United States is, after adjusting for inflation, rising but not yet to pre-recession levels: http://youtube.com/rosianna

6. This article explores how we try to have internationally comparable unemployment rates: http://youtube.com/rosianna

7. This web site has an easy-to-use interface that allows you to look at the U-3, U-5, and U-6 unemployment figures over time: http://youtube.com/rosianna

8. This has up-to-date figures all unemployment measures (including U-1 and U-2, which aren't discussed in this video): http://youtube.com/rosianna

I think that's it. If you have any specific questions, let me know and I'll try to add sources here.

Defining the Unemployment Rate

How is unemployment defined in the United States? If someone has a job, they’re defined as “employed.” But does that mean that everyone without a job is unemployed? Not exactly. A minor without a job isn’t unemployed. Someone who has been incarcerated also isn’t counted. A retiree, too, does not count toward the unemployment rate. For the official statistics, you have to meet quite a few criteria to be considered unemployed in the U.S. For instance, if you’re without a job, but have actively looked for work in the past four weeks, you are considered unemployed. In times of recession, when people are faced...

Conflict in Israel and Palestine: Crash Course World History 223

In which John Green teaches you about conflict in Israel and Palestine. This conflict is often cast as a long-term beef going back thousands of years, and rooted in a clash between religions. Well, that's not quite true. What is true is that the conflict is immensely complicated, and just about everyone in the world has an opinion about it. John is going to try to get the facts across in under 13 minutes. Cyclical Unemployment

This wk: More from Macro -- Cyclical unemployment, sticky wages, natural unemployment, and more. Coming soon: Who works? Who doesn’t? Why? Get a big picture view on labor force participation. Unemployment rates ebb and flow with business cycle phases. We all saw this when unemployment rates increased in the United States during the 2008 recession. What we observed was called cyclical unemployment, and it usually accompanies slow economic growth. It can take many years for unemployment rates to return to pre-recession levels, even after real GDP per capita growth has bounced back. Why is that? For starters, supply and demand in labor markets...

Is the Gender Pay Gap Real?

In which John examines the complex and tangled question of the gender wage gap, and looks at some of the reasons why women who work full time are paid less than men who work full time. Sources: The pay gap increases as workers age, and there is a pay gap across all education and experience levels and in almost all professions. Also, the pay gap is larger for women of color, across all education and experience levels: http://www.aauw.org/files/2015/02/The-Simple-Truth_Spring-2015.pdf The size of the gender pay gap depends on how you calculate it, but discrimination is a big factor in the pay gap: http://blog.dol.gov/2012/06/07/myth-busting-the-pay-gap/ and...

Why Does January First Start the New Year? - New Year's Explained

Year End Survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9CR8YDL CORRECTIONS: 1. Julius Caesar was not technically the first emperor of Rome, he declared himself dictator for life but did not establish a hereditary monarchy. His cousin, who succeeded him, Augustus, established the monarchy and was thus the first emperor. 2. I mispronounced Aloysius Lilius. It's like "Allowishus" which is a name I had heard, but never seen spelled! 3. The picture of Rome I used was MUCH LATER than 46 BC In which Hank goes deep (but not too deep) into the reasons why our calendar begins on January 1st, and why January 1st is when it is. I...

How Young Is History?

In which John Green considers the historical distance between Rome's Pantheon, the cave paintings at Lascaux, a different community's cave paintings at Chauvet, and the current day. Too often, we think that a hundred years, or a thousand, can tell us the whole story or history or art history. But cave paintings remind us that what we think of as history is a tiny fraction of the human story.
