Hi, I'm Tom Scott. These are some of the things I've made and done. They'll probably come back to haunt me in a few years' time. (Want to get in touch about anything? Use the "contact me" link below, not YouTube messages!)

Video description
Hold on tight, because with a stabilised camera shot and a pair of sunglasses, you're about to see a video that works in both 2D and 3D at the same time. The technique's called the Pulfrich Effect, and this is how it works.

Bell's Theorem: The Quantum Venn Diagram Paradox

Even though Albert Einstein (together with collaborators in the EPR Paradox paper) wanted to show that quantum mechanics must be incomplete because it was nonlocal (he didn't like "spooky action at a distance"), John Bell managed to prove that any local real hidden variable theory would have to satisfy certain simple statistical properties that quantum mechanical experiments (and the theory that describes them) violate. Since then, GHZ and...

27 EASY MAGIC TRICKS

SURPRISING MAGIC TRICKS This video is full of magic! You will learn how to make optical illusions that seem physically impossible. It’s a perfect way to prank your friends and have a lot of fun. For perfect performance you need to practice a lot otherwise the tricks will be too slow. Let’s start from the trick when a girl eats her fingers. She pretends to chew while managing her time perfectly in order to conceal the finger she is supposedly biting off. Next trick is moving hat. You need to wear an oversized jacket and instead of having your hand inside...

Weird things happen like the sudden appearing of objects, shape changing, sudden mirror imaging and more! This video is helpful to understanding a 4th spatial dimension using the simplest object...a sphere. This is easier than a tesseract to understand because it looks the same from all directions. Why California's Musical Road Sounds Terrible

The Moiré Effect Lights That Guide Ships Home

I'd never heard of moiré effect beacons until I got an email asking me about them. It seemed like a really clever idea - but it was really hard to research. Or at least it was, until I stumbled upon one magic phrase that revealed its history. It turns out this thing's called an "Inogon leading mark" or "Inogon light" -- Inogon, not Inogen -- and it's a Swedish invention from the 1980s. But there's still a question: why is being used to mark an undersea cable, instead of guiding people home? (Full disclosure: there were some weird strobing effects from the...

This 3D Quantum Gas Clock Could Redefine Time

Time may be a human construct but that hasn't stopped physicists from perfecting it. In doing so, they are the first to harness the ultra-controlled behavior of a so-called “quantum gas” to make a practical measurement device.” Jun Ye: Let There Be Light (and Thus, Time) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbBmkooNse4 Dr. Jun Ye, professor of physics at the University...

FizzBuzz: One Simple Interview Question

There are a lot of opinions on how to hire coders, and most of them are terrible. The opinions, that is, not the coders. But a basic filter test to make sure someone can do what they say they can: that seems reasonable, and FizzBuzz is one of the more common tests. Even now, interviewers use it.
