Tectonic Earthquakes of the Pacific Northwest

The Pacific Northwest is host to more than the anticipated megathrust earthquake that will happen off the Cascadia coast in the future. That earthquake will be due to the stress building between the Juan de Fuca and North American plates as the oceanic Juan de Fuca plate dives deep beneath the Pacific Northwest. However, there are also deep earthquakes within the subducting plate, and shallow earthquakes in the overlying continental crust. This is because of additional forces acting on the region besides subduction-zone processes. Written and directed by Dr. Robert Butler, University of Portland, OR Animation and graphics by Jenda Johnson,...

I sometimes use this animation of a real-time magnitude 9.0 Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake in my presentations.

How the Pacific Northwest is preparing for a catastrophic tsunami

It’s when, not if, the Pacific Northwest is due for a major seismic disaster; scientists say there’s a 37 percent chance one could strike in the next 50 years. FEMA estimates such an earthquake and resulting tsunami could kill thousands and leave a million more homeless. But some concerned coastal communities are working to make sure they’re ready when it hits. William Brangham reports.

200 years on the Erie Canal

Two hundreds years ago, construction began on a 363-mile canal linking the Great Lakes to the Hudson River and New York City - an engineering and commercial triumph as revolutionary as the Internet. But the Erie Canal was dismissed at first. New York politician DeWitt Clinton spent 10 years fighting to sell the project to a deeply skeptical public, and Presidents Jefferson and Madison refused to help fund it. Yet the canal quickly changed the geography and commerce of the young nation. Richard Schlesinger reports on the history of the Erie Canal, still celebrated in song as an example of...

This movie shows a physics-based computer simulation of the tsunami expected from the next Cascadia Earthquake. The last large Cascadia earthquake happened in January, 1700. It is thought that the fault is getting toward the final stages in the earthquake cycle and could break again at any time. The simulation suggests runups of as much as 10 meters could hit most adjacent shores within 30 minutes. For more tsunami and natural hazard information visit

Violent Shaking Along The Ring Of Fire, Pacific is Moving - 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Ecuador

Violent Shaking Along The Ring Of Fire, Pacific is Moving - 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Ecuador If you are not familiar with the Ring of Fire, it is an area roughly shaped like a horseshoe that runs along the outer perimeter of the Pacific Ocean. Approximately 90 percent of all earthquakes and approximately 75 percent of all volcanic eruptions occur along the Ring of Fire. Just within the last two weeks, we have witnessed 16 earthquakes of at least magnitude 6.0. This violent shaking along the Ring of Fire seems to continue a progression of major disasters...
