Drones Sacrificed for Spectacular Volcano Video | National Geographic

Video technology and science converge on an active volcano in Vanuatu, where explorer Sam Cossman operated camera-mounted drones to capture high-definition images of the spectacular yet dangerous Marum Crater. Cossman and his team piloted the drones over the 7.5-mile-wide (12-kilometer) caldera while confronting toxic gases and boiling lava. Although two drones succumbed to the harsh environment, the team was able to bring back video and photos that will help scientists learn more about the volcano and the life around it. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Why Hawaii's volcano is so UNUSUAL

Hawaii is known for its volcanoes, but most volcanoes on earth exist along tectonic plate lines. Hawaii does not! What causes Hawaii to form, and how is it related to the mystery of a magnetic bar code across the Pacific Ocean? Host Dianna Cowern chatted with geologist Noah Randolph-Flagg from UC Berkeley while hiking on the island of Kauai. Lava Bombs Wreak Havoc on Hawaiian Island

Lava bombs are the latest danger striking Hawaii following earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. A lava bomb is molten rock that's hurled into the air by a volcanic eruption and then solidifies before it hits the ground. Footage of the so-called lava bombs dropping was live streamed by self-described “lava chaser” Demian Barrios and has gone viral since it was posted Sunday. Experts say lava bombs can be the size of a pickup truck.

Creeping lava, toxic gas: Why Hawaii volcano is a unique disaster

Kilauea's newest eruption is devastating the Big Island with fiery lava flows and volcanic air pollution. Scientists warn that Hawaii's Kilauea volcano is on the verge of a new explosion that could send ash, steam and sulfur dioxide spewing from the summit crater and toss six-foot wide boulders as far as a half-mile away in all directions. "Primary hazards of concern should this activity occur are ballistic projectiles and ashfall," according to the Hawaiian Volcanic Observatory of the U.S. Geological Survey. The scientists, however, said they were uncertain exactly when the new eruption would occur, how long it would last or how violent...

What causes a volcanic eruption? | Natural Disasters

In this video we look at how the continuous movement of Earth's tectonic plates results in volcanic activity. In a volcanic eruption, super-heated magma from within the earth’s upper mantle works its way to the surface. This most often occurs at tectonic plate boundaries, but some volcanoes can also form over 'hotspots', or weak areas in the earth's crust.
