Why does the Hawaii Kilauea volcano keep erupting?

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano could soon send boulders and ash shooting out of its summit crater in the kind of explosive eruption last displayed nearly a century ago. CBC science commentator Bob McDonald explains why Kilauea has been continually erupting for centuries and how it compares to other volcanoes. »»» Subscribe to CBC News to watch more videos: http://bit.ly/1RreYWS Connect with CBC News Online: For breaking news, video, audio and in-depth coverage: http://bit.ly/1Z0m6iX Find CBC News on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1WjG36m Follow CBC News on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1sA5P9H For breaking news on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1WjDyks Follow CBC News on Instagram: http://bit.ly/1Z0iE7O Download the CBC News app for iOS: http://apple.co/25mpsUz Download the CBC News app...

Why Hawaii's volcano is so UNUSUAL

Hawaii is known for its volcanoes, but most volcanoes on earth exist along tectonic plate lines. Hawaii does not! What causes Hawaii to form, and how is it related to the mystery of a magnetic bar code across the Pacific Ocean? Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island smiles as it erupts

Lava cascaded off of cliffs on Hawaii's Big Island on Wednesday (July 27), marking the first time since 2013 that one of Kilauea's lava flows reached the ocean. Lava from the volcano, located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, began erupting in late May and has been continuously moving on a six-mile journey towards the coast. Authorities have said the lava poses no threat to any towns, but have cautioned tourists to keep their distance. Despite the warning, people could be seen near the flow, taking pictures and watching the spectacle. What are the top stories today? Rivers of fast-moving lava flow from Hawaii's volcano

New, fast-moving lava poured from the flank of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, destroying four more homes on the Big Island after a second explosive eruption shot a nearly 3.2km ash plume from the crater. Molten rock from two huge cracks formed a single channel and travelled 300 metres in under an hour, twice the speed of previous flows of older lava that have torn through homes, roads and tropical forest for over two weeks, the County of Hawaii's Civil Defense Agency said. Hawaii Island Volcanoes

This video has been published on April 20, 2018 (2 weeks before the current eruption). The island of Hawaii is built from five separate shield volcanoes that erupted somewhat sequentially, one overlapping the other. These volcanoes are: Kīlauea, Mauna Loa, Hualālai, Mauna Kea and Kohala. Kīlauea is a currently active shield volcano in the Hawaiian Islands, and the most active of the five volcanoes. It has been erupting nearly continuously since 1983 and has caused considerable property damage, including the destruction of the town of Kalapana in 1990. The 2018 lower Puna eruption, which began May 3, over several weeks opened two...
