Drones Sacrificed for Spectacular Volcano Video | National Geographic

Video technology and science converge on an active volcano in Vanuatu, where explorer Sam Cossman operated camera-mounted drones to capture high-definition images of the spectacular yet dangerous Marum Crater. Cossman and his team piloted the drones over the 7.5-mile-wide (12-kilometer) caldera while confronting toxic gases and boiling lava. Although two drones succumbed to the harsh environment, the team was able to bring back video and photos that will help scientists learn more about the volcano and the life around it. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Lava Pours Steadily From Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano

Researchers captured dramatic footage of a steady stream of lava pouring from the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. The heat of the lava as it flowed into the sea triggered explosions, which threw debris back onto the top of the cliff. Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island smiles as it erupts

Lava cascaded off of cliffs on Hawaii's Big Island on Wednesday (July 27), marking the first time since 2013 that one of Kilauea's lava flows reached the ocean. Lava from the volcano, located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, began erupting in late May and has been continuously moving on a six-mile journey towards the coast. Authorities have said the lava poses no threat to any towns, but have cautioned tourists to keep their distance. Despite the warning, people could be seen near the flow, taking pictures and watching the spectacle. What are the top stories today? Kīlauea Summit Eruption | Lava Returns to Halemaʻumaʻu

In March 2008, a new volcanic vent opened within Halema‘uma‘u, a crater at the summit of Kīlauea Volcano in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on the Island of Hawaiʻi. This new vent is one of two ongoing eruptions on the volcano. The other is on Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone, where vents have been erupting nearly nonstop since 1983. The duration of these simultaneous summit and rift zone eruptions on Kīlauea is unmatched in at least 200 years. Since 2008, Kīlauea’s summit eruption has consisted of continuous degassing, occasional explosive events, and an active, circulating lava lake. Because of ongoing volcanic hazards...
